Why More Utah Couples Are Handling Their Divorce Online

About half of Utah’s divorce petitioners walk into their case without an attorney, and the share is even higher for the spouse who didn’t file the petition themselves. That’s not a new development. What’s changed is how those couples get their paperwork done. Many spouses are turning to online preparation services, SimpleEnding among them, to get the documents organized correctly.

    Self-Representation Was Already the Norm

Utah’s courts have tracked this for years, and the numbers are consistent.

The Numbers Behind ItState court data shows that 49% of divorce petitioners do not have an attorney. For the responding spouse, the figure rises to about 81%. A Utah legislative analysis also found that nearly half of divorce cases involve two spouses without attorneys. These figures come from before online divorce preparation tools became widely available. What Changed Wasn’t the Decision to Go It Alone

Couples handling their own divorce isn’t new in Utah. What’s different now is what handling it alone looks like. A decade ago, that meant downloading blank PDF forms and figuring out what to write in each field. Today it more often means an online interview that asks the same questions a form does, but generates a complete, consistent packet across every document at once. A stack of separately filled-out paper forms rarely lines up as cleanly.

The Cost Gap Is Wide, Even for Simple Cases

Money is a significant part of the shift, especially for cases that don’t need a contested court fight.

    What Attorney Representation Runs

Family law attorneys along the Wasatch Front typically bill somewhere in the $250 to $400 an hour range. Even an uncontested case that never sees a contested hearing can run several thousand dollars once attorney time is added up, largely because hourly billing doesn’t distinguish between complex negotiation and routine paperwork.

    What Online Preparation Runs

Prep services built around uncontested filings charge a flat fee that’s a fraction of that, usually in the low hundreds of dollars. SimpleEnding uses a flat fee for its Utah divorce document preparation, so you pay one set amount for the completed packet rather than an hourly rate that continues to add up as the case progresses.

It Fits How Most Utah Divorces Resolve

Utah’s divorce process already favors no-fault and uncontested cases. Most petitions cite irreconcilable differences, and when both spouses agree on the terms, the main task is making sure the paperwork accurately reflects that agreement. The petition, stipulation, and decree need to match. That’s the kind of work an online preparation tool is designed to handle, which helps explain why these services have become more common.

Where a Service Like SimpleEnding Fits

An online preparation service is suitable for every case. Couples who are still negotiating custody, business assets, or support disputes may need legal advice and representation that a document preparation tool does not provide. For the roughly half of Utah couples who already agree on the terms and plan to handle the divorce themselves, services like SimpleEnding can make the paperwork more organized and consistent than working through a stack of blank court forms on their own.
